News Recap: A Week in the Boxing Sphere

New Zealand heavyweight hopeful Joseph Parker beat game Carlos Takem in an IBF title eliminator on Saturday. Parker, 24, showed great grit to last the 36 minute distance and he also proved his chin is durable. He is one step closer to fighting Anthony Joshua who will feel he can expose Parker’s vulnerable defence. However, Takem is arguably better than anyone Joshua has faced in the past which suggests that a bout with Parker would be a step up in quality.

Gennady Golovkin is now the WBC middleweight world champion. Why? Because Canelo Alvarez vacated the green strap.
Canelo’s promotor, Oscar De La Hoya explained: “There is no denying that Canelo is the biggest star in the sport of boxing. He is eager to get in the ring with GGG to show the world that he is also the best pound for pound fighter in the sport, but we won’t negotiate under a forced deadline. Now that the WBC title is off the table, I am hopeful that GGG and his promoter K2 Promotions will come to the table in good faith and get this deal done.”
An encounter we all want to see but if you are hoping for the biggest fight in boxing, you may be left disappointed.

Eddie Hearn has confirmed that welterweight champions Kell Brook and Jessie Vargas are on the verge of announcing a unification fight for late August early September. Expect an announcement imminently. The UK is the likely location.

Chris Eubank Jr has again signed with Matchroom Promotions and will continue his plight in the middleweight division on SKy Sports Box Office. On June 25 he will fight Welshman Tom Doran, who is returning after a sensational second round stoppage over Dubliner Luke Keeler, a clash where both men were dropped. The contest, a mismatch in Eubank’s favour, will be on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s mandatory heavyweight title defence.

The ring return of David Haye was as predictable as Shannon Briggs screaming “Let’s Go Champ’ to the 20,000 spectators at the 02 Arena London whenever he was near a microphone. Arnold Gjergjaj was the opponent Haye stopped in round two after the referee waved away the match following three knockdowns. The second one was caused by a jab.
Briggs, now 44, scored a first round KO win on the undercard to set up a fight with David Haye, one which any true boxing fan won’t want to see.
