An inspiring achievement. Kellie Harrington, 26, joined elite company as she boxed in a senior World Championship final, following in the footsteps of Katie Taylor, Michael Conlan, Jason Quigley and Joe Ward. Her finale against China’s Yang Wenlu was tight and ended in a split decision win to Harringston’s opponent in Astana today. The light-welterweight from Glasnevin started confidently, claiming the centre of the ring, but the Chinese fighter threw the more punches. In round three Harrington connected with crisp right hands which Wenlu didn’t see coming. Unfortunately two of the judges awarded the round to Wenlu.
