Full Power’s Matthew Whyte talks Cage Legacy, Mikey McCoy, Decky Dalton and future plans
At the inaugural Cage Legacy Fighting Championships on 28th October Full Power’s Matthew Whyte will face Mikey McCoy in the amateur flyweight division.
This will be the biggest stage which Whyte has performed on and at just 17 years old he’s looking to make an early statement of things to come.
Fighting in front of his home crowd will be a ‘nervous’ experience but he said, “I’m confident that I’ll get the win on the show. It’s scary but I’ll have lots of adrenaline which should make up for it.”
McCoy is undefeated in his amateur career and comes into this fight on the back of two stoppage victories.
Whyte himself has excelled in the striking department, claiming the TFC super-lightweight Irish K-1 title earlier this year. He admits that McCoy’s last opponent ‘wasn’t really a good striker’.
“I know he’s a good boxer overall. If he has the upper-hand on the feet I’ll take it to the ground because I don’t think he has a strong ground game. I’m going to try and submit him,” said Whyte.
“I want to prove that I’m not just a stand up fighter. I’ve been training in Jiu Jitsu as long as I’ve been training in K1,” he said.
Full Power Gym will be represented by a number of fighters at Cage Legacy including Decky Dalton in the main event against SBG’s Peter Queally.
With a high standard of talented fighters in the gym it has proven to be a very beneficial environment for Whyte.
“We have good bodies in the gym, all with great quality. I’ve been training with Decky Dalton which has improved my game. He’s always showing me how to improve and teaching me new striking techniques.”
“I’m constantly improving. Full Power gym is like a family and if I’m doing something wrong they’ll correct me and help me fix it,” he said.
Whyte has fought in Drogheda before but explains that it was not a great performance from himself. This time round he intends on being more relaxed and wants to show everyone what he can do.
“This time will be a lot better. Last time I was chasing my opponent around the ring trying to land punches because I was nervous but this time I’ll be a lot more technical.”
After Cage Legacy, Matthew Whyte sets his sights on the Full Power K-1 show in November where he’ll meet Aaron McGuigan in a title fight.
He expects to hold two titles by the end of the year, setting him up for a busy 2017 where he will aim to get as many fights under his belt as possible.
