No 1 – Jordan Matthews (Langka) vs Daryl Flood (Warriors) – Pro B Class Thai
A captivating contest between two young fighters with obvious talent and pedigree for the sport. The sensation Daryl Flood walked away victorious with a third round TKO stoppage but Matthews made him work hard for it.
Round one saw Flood land his trademark spinning heel kick which subdued Matthew’s positive start. The Langka fighter would emerge for the second round guns blazing. He walked forward and pressurized Flood who opted to use the clinch to his advantage.
In round three the killer blow landed, Flood’s knee connected with Matthews head and almost dropped him. The fight continued but after the bell rang, the doctor called a halt due to a deep cut under Matthew’s eye. One moment can change a fight and Flood emerged triumphant adding another scalp to his collection.
No 2 – Collin Murphy (Langka) vs Conor Cooke (Heat MMA) – Pro Irish 88.5 kg Title
The Devinish rattled as the noise levels intensified for the title fight. Murphy v Cooke: no one expected this to last three rounds. With an ISKA belt on the line their hunger for the fight was visible.
Cooke was quick out of the blocks, letting his hands go, applying the pressure early. Murphy composed himself and threw his leg kick, it should have been a warning to Cooke. They went back and forth, trading combo’s, neither had an upper hand until Murphy landed another leg kick near the end of round one. Cooke fell and was given a count; the crowd roared in anticipation.
He continued, narrowly surviving to the bell. Murphy sensed victory and attacked Cooke’s leg. Three strikes and he was out, unable to continue. The home crowd erupted and the new ISKA champion held his belt aloft.
No 3 – Garret Smylie (Langka) vs Joe Doyle (Warriors) – Pro C Class Thai
Perhaps one of the most exciting fights on the night. Joe Doyle was simply mesmerizing in round one but ultimately it was Garrett Smylie who walked away with his hand raised, impressing in the last two rounds.
Doyle unleashed his arsenal of kicks in the first round, landing spinning heel kicks to the head and body. He looked calm and brought the fight to his Langka opponent. An evener second round ensued as Smylie found his form and landed a number of leg kicks but his beautifully timed sweep stood out as a highlight of the round.
Smylie gained momentum and attacked Doyle in the final round. He found success through leg kicks and added more sweeps. Doyle never stopped coming forward but it would be the Langka fighter who edged their contest.
No 4 – Alan McCormick (Origins Dublin) vs Andrew Finnegan (Hodgers Gym) – Pro C Class Thai
Intensity and aggression were on display as McCormick’s all-round performance outclassed Finnegan over three rounds. He adopted a relentless pace early in the fight and hustled and harried his opponent until the final bell. Nimble on the feet, he attacked at speed, throwing leg kicks and teep kicks which knocked Finnegan backwards.
The man from Hodger’s gym found it impossible to take a foot hold in the fight. McCormick was on top form, following his every punch with a body or leg kick. He held the centre of the ring and allowed Finnegan to make mistakes which he took full advantage off. A dominant display which was fully deserving of the decision victory.
No 5 – Niall McGreevy (Langka) vs Mark McGahey (Spartans Cork) – Pro C Class Thai
A bout which really got the crowd behind the fighters. It kicked off the pro card in style and treated us to a very competitive contest. The home favourite Niall McGreevy edged a close battle with Cork’s Mark McGahey after three exciting rounds.
It was a slug fest throughout, McGahey closed the distance to avoid McGreevy’s reach advantage and they teed off on each other. Each fighter enjoyed periods of dominance in the opening rounds and it seemed like a very close battle entering the final round. McGreevy, roared on by the home crowd connected with two successive head kicks which lit up the arena. He used his reach to his advantage and closed out the fight, taking the first pro win of the night.
