David Haye sends message to heavyweight division with explosive return

To see a character and a fighter as ferocious as David Haye return to the ring is good for boxing, regardless of whether you’re a fan or not.

He entered the ropes at the 02 arena, London with a menacing stare for his opponent Mark de Mori.

Haye, clad in a God like white robe with gold trimmings, embraced the audience and enjoyed every moment of his comeback after a three and a half year absence.

As the bell sounded, a vociferous crowd roared for their 35-year-old home favourite, and he didn’t disappoint as he came out throwing, and landing, eye catching punches.

What’s ominous for potential Haye opponents in the future is that the Londoner’s speed and power is still prevalent.

Ring rustiness wasn’t an issue as he blasted his Australian opponent with withering body shots, textbook one two combinations and venomous right hands.

As round one neared a climax, Haye ended the contest with a clubbing over hand right which floored de Mori and Haye showed a crucial killer instinct by slashing him with a left uppercut on his way down to the canvas.

And that was that. David Haye returned to the ring with a first round KO. Whether he is good enough to dethrone Tyson Fury or halt the Olympic hero Anthony Joshua is yet to be seen, but while he remains in boxing, it will be an exhilarating ride for fight fans around the world.

Haye’s record now stands at 27 victories (25 KO’s) and two defeats. The former cruiserweight and heavyweight world champion will now be attempting to regain the most famous title in boxing.

Whether it’s for money, a love for the sport, a self-belief that he can still achieve greatness, or even all three, it’s refreshing to watch David Haye, under new trainer Shane McGuigan, do what he does best.

The Hayemaker is back.
