Danny Garcia victory over Robert Guerrero earns WBC Welterweight championship
Danny Garcia outpointed Robert Guerrero 116-112 on all three judge’s score cards to obtain the WBC welterweight belt at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, on Saturday.
Floyd Mayweather looked on from ringside to see who would claim the title he vacated.
Also present was Amir Khan, who according to the WBC, is mandatory for a rematch with the undefeated Garcia next.
It was 32-year-old Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero who started the bout better. In round one he unfurled a barrage of shots without enduring too much punishment in the process from the Philadelphian.
After a competitive 15 minutes, Garcia, 27, established control from round six onwards where he connected with thudding hooks, thrown from a wide angle which connected crisply to his opponents head and body.
Garcia, notorious in the fight game for his venomous left hook, maintained a game plan of fighting on the back foot, drawing Guerrero in, and clubbing him with counter punches before Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KOs) had a chance to unload effectively.
He displayed impressive ring craftsmanship against the southpaw. After controlling the second half of the contest, fans were treated to the best round of the night in the twelfth.
With 20 seconds remaining, the two fighters stood toe to toe throwing wild hooks, abandoning their defences with both warriors refusing to take a step back.
It was an engaging match-up. Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs) was awarded the decision which was deserved.
Some of the punches he threw were deadly and only for Guerrero’s admirable chin and bravery was he able to last the distance.
The welterweight division is a scintillating weight class and 2016 promises to produce some fascinating 147 pound fights.
WBA title holder Keith Thurman faces former champion Shawn Porter on March 12, which is set to be the next lucrative welterweight clash.
