Katie Taylor controversially beaten by Estelle Mossely in World semi-final

Frenchwoman Estelle Mossely (23) beat Katie Taylor (29) via split decision in the semi-final of the World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan in a fast paced bout this afternoon.

It was a subjective fight to score but the Bray woman can count herself unlucky.

The middle rounds were close with both fighters having success.

However in round four Taylor was back to her best as she landed the better quality combinations and demonstrated the quicker footwork to finish strongly.

Taylor was chasing her sixth consecutive world championship gold medal but had to settle for a bronze. Rounds one to three were tight and Taylor wasn’t her usual dominant self which may have made the judges favour Mossely. Prior to this contest Taylor hadn’t dropped a round in the tournament.

Mossely will be delighted with her efforts after beating Taylor for the first time in four attempts. She is improving steadily and is destined for a bright future.

The legendary Irish boxer will now focus on defending her lightweight gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games in August.
