Ireland’s newest star Kellie Harrington claims silver medal at World Championships
An inspiring achievement. Kellie Harrington, 26, joined elite company as she boxed in a senior World Championship final, following in the footsteps of Katie Taylor, Michael Conlan, Jason Quigley and Joe Ward.
Her finale against China’s Yang Wenlu was tight and ended in a split decision win to Harringston’s opponent in Astana today.
The light-welterweight from Glasnevin started confidently, claiming the centre of the ring, but the Chinese fighter threw the more punches.
In round three Harrington connected with crisp right hands which Wenlu didn’t see coming. Unfortunately two of the judges awarded the round to Wenlu.
Harrington gave it her all in round four and landed with a stunning left hand which she threw from the southpaw position.
Only recently did Kellie Harrington start training with the High Performance Unit and this was her first major tournament.
A silver medal in the world championships is an admirable feat and by judging her displays in this competition, the future could be golden for the Dublin boxer.
